A no cost, two-year program
First year is called TAP Lab - An Integration of Theory and Practice

The Teacher Apprenticeship Program (TAP), a no cost training opportunity, will allow CAPA’s Advanced Training graduates to learn best practices for teaching psychoanalytic/psychodynamic theory and technique and to observe an experienced CAPA faculty member.
In the first year of TAP, participants attend the TAP Lab – An Integration of Theory and Practice. TAP Lab is an 8-10 session/60-minute seminar and is led the Chair of TAP. The TAP Lab explores various teaching models, the integration of these models into personal teaching styles, practical teaching skills, and includes group discussion of challenges and successes. In TAP Lab, apprentices will take turns ‘teaching’ concepts and leading a discussion with the whole group from an assigned article provided by the instructor. After the teaching presentation, the group then discusses the experience and provides feedback to the Apprentice.
In the second year, each Apprentice Teacher will be assigned to a Cooperating Faculty Member. The Apprentice will sit in on the trimester’s classes, helping the Cooperating Faculty evaluate the students’ understanding of the material (this can include collecting and reviewing homework assignments and alerting the Cooperating Faculty about any concerns), all while observing the teaching practices of their Cooperating Faculty. If mutually agreed upon, the Apprentice may have the opportunity to teach one or more class sessions.
Upon completing the first year of TAP Lab and the second year of at least one trimester (10 sessions) of observation, CAPA will email a certificate of participation to each Apprentice. Apprentices are also encouraged to utilize their TAP experience to support the psychoanalytic/psychodynamic community in China.
Teacher Apprenticeship Program Goals and Learning Outcomes
Participants in this program will:
Gain a foundational experience for CAPA Advanced Training graduates interested in teaching the next generation of psychodynamic psychotherapists
Attend 8-10 sessions of TAP Lab
Observe and work with a CAPA Cooperating Faculty member with the potential of teaching a class session
Explore and observe teaching models, methods, styles, and approaches
Gain practical experience preparing for and executing a class session in Theory or Technique
Discuss successes and challenges and how to incorporate feedback into personal teaching styles
Provide CAPA alumni with an experience that contributes to the qualifications for consideration in becoming a CAPA Theory and/or Technique teacher
Admission Criteria and Requirements
The Teacher Apprenticeship Program (TAP) is open to all Advanced Training graduates, at no cost. A current CV is required to be submitted with the application form.
